AFSR Classes, Workshops, Memberships

Group adult classes (18+) are taught in French by a native-fluent instructor in an inclusive, interactive setting. The classes emphasize oral and written comprehension and production. Themed classes and workshops hone in on specific linguistic and cultural skills. Textbooks and course materials are either provided by the instructor or can be obtained online or at bookstores (info to be provided for each course).

    Join us on Friday, March 7th at the Bennett Valley Grange, the oldest Grange Hall in America, to celebrate the beginning of "le Mois de la Francophonie" (International French Speaking Month) with a very special Jane for Tea Concert! Jane for Tea is a Toulouse-based French duo that delivers pop songs with a multitude of influences from the twenties to the present day.   • Please join the board of the Alliance for the in-person Assemblée Générale dinner and annual meeting, at Maison Porcella in Windsor, on Monday, October 21, 2024, starting at 6:00 pm. We will start with an apéritif, exclusive to our current members (get/renew your annual membership), with charcuterie and sparkling wine on us, then proceed to vote at 7 pm to renew our Board of Directors (only current members can vote). After 7 pm, members and non-members alike are invited to join us for dinner. Please purchase dinner tickets online for each person in your family (adults or children) who will be attending, and make sure to make your choice of dessert when purchasing. Each ticket includes:
    • Adult: A main course of a croque-monsieur and salad, a choice of dessert, and 1 glass of wine.
    • Child (under 12): One-half croque-monsieur and french fries, choice of dessert, and 1 glass of sirop à l'eau (grenadine or other flavors)
    Dessert choices are: tarte aux fruits de saison or tarte au chocolat.     This class is for the complete Beginner. Traveling to France soon, need French for work or for personal pursuits? Beginning French teaches students to communicate immediately in Everyday Situations by learning the building blocks of the language. Students practice dialogues to introduce themselves, ask questions, make purchases, and enjoy the culture and challenges of everyday life. Use of current practical expressions, correct pronunciation and grammar, and cultural know-how are stressed. Minimum enrollment is needed for classes to run. This is an ongoing class for students who have studied a fair amount of level 1 curriculum with the goal of sharpening communication skills in Everyday Situations by learning the building blocks of the language.  Students practice dialogues to introduce themselves, ask questions, make purchases, and enjoy the culture and challenges of everyday life. Use of current practical expressions, correct pronunciation, grammar, and cultural know-how are stressed, focusing on a communicative approach to the language. This class will help students learn to enjoy and interact in the French culture, whether it be for travel, work, or personal pursuits. Our classes depend upon minimum enrollment.     Get the most out of your vacation to France! Join French for Travelers at AFSR and practice essential vocabulary for dining in restaurants, staying in hotels, buying train and museum tickets, shopping the beautiful street markets and more. A little French can go a long way when you follow Nelson Mandela's quote “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” Come have fun with us and swap travel tips and stories with fellow learners. This travel series is for A1-A2 level students who have had at least 1 8-week session of French recently. (Levels A1-A2)

French for Advanced-Beginners A2:  At the A2 level, students continue to strengthen their skills in French through proper pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, focusing on a communicative approach to the language. Dialogues and listening activities are stressed and students read short stories to expand their vocabulary, grammar and comprehension.This class will help students learn to enjoy and interact in the French culture, whether it be for travel, work, or personal pursuits.
