Topics will include the rivalry between the Academic painters and the Impressionists, the restoration and redesign of historic monuments, revivalist movements and the national myths underlying them, the history of female artists in France, and the social history of art and how the system of commissions and the role of the artist have evolved since the time of Charlemagne. Students will discover the real oppositions and irreducible conflicts that make the history of French art so tumultuous, and will argue their opinions in a series of mock-debates. (B1/B2 Level)
