Over the course of eight classes, students will practice their communication skills by debating some of the controversial moments in the history of French art. Topics will include the rivalry between the Academic painters and the Impressionists, the restoration and redesign of historic monuments, revivalist movements and the national myths underlying them, the history of female artists in France, and the social history of art and how the system of commissions and the role of the artist have evolved since the time of Charlemagne. Students will discover the real oppositions and irreducible conflicts that make the history of French art so tumultuous, and will argue their opinions in a series of mock-debates. In-person class!  This class is designed to inspire students of advanced intermediate French to deepen their appreciation and enjoyment of the French language and culture through a lively and conversational approach to selections of poetry, short stories and excerpts from literary texts.  Authors and poets will range from the classics to the 20th century, including Francophone poets.  Songs will be chosen for their cultural and poetic value and to improve listening comprehension.  My goal is that students gain both a deeper understanding of French literature and that they gain confidence in expressing their thoughts and feelings in a nurturing and relaxed environment.
