Through an encounter with the rich and diverse history of French art, students will improve their ability to describe and discuss artworks and communicate their visual impressions, as they  journey through the history of French art. From the gargoyles and the delicate tracery of Gothic sculpture and architecture through the flowering of humanism during the Renaissance; the pomp and emotion of baroque art during the grand siècle under Louis XIV to the enchantments of French rococo; the dizzying proliferation of styles  –– realism, romanticism, symbolism, impressionism, and others –– that marked the tumultuous 19th century and the rise of the bourgeoisie as the principal consumers of art, and finally culminating in the experimental avant-garde of the 20th century and the development of abstraction. “Exploration de Contes, poèmes et chansons”:
This class is designed to inspire students of advanced intermediate French to deepen their appreciation and enjoyment of the French language and culture through a lively and conversational approach to selections of poetry, short stories and excerpts from literary texts.  Authors and poets will range from the classics to the 20th century, including Francophone poets.  Songs will be chosen for their cultural and poetic value and to improve listening comprehension.  My goal is that students gain both a deeper understanding of French literature and that they gain confidence in expressing their thoughts and feelings in a nurturing and relaxed environment.
