Our next film is set in the neighborhood of Les Olympiades, a high-rise housing development located in the working-class 13th district, the primary quartier asiatique of Paris. The story concerns the intersections of life and love in a quartet of young people who come from diverse backgrounds. Director Jacques Audiard gives us a unique insight into streets and subcultures not often seen in film adaptations of la vie Parisienne.
Screen the film at home on Amazon or other popular streaming services, and then join Joelle Pluchon and Peter Zingg at 5 pm on Wednesday, March 8 for a bilingual discussion on Zoom.
Here’s an article about how Audiard adapted an American graphic artist’s short stories into a Parisian fable (CONTAINS SPOILERS).
And a little tour (en français) of Tang Frères (the biggest Asian market in Paris) with Frédéric Chau, a French-Asian actor who has made several other films on the 13e arrondissement.
