Beginner Group Classes

Beginning French teaches the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading, and writing French. Common themes covered are greetings, exchanging simple information, restaurant, travel, family, weather, activities and shopping. Students learn correct pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary through student interactions while exploring French and francophone cultures.

As students progress through the beginning levels, new thematic units and vocabulary are introduced such as clothing, careers, daily routines and activities, foods, transportation, and directions. Through paired and group activities, simple conversations, dictations, and grammatical patterns students learn to comprehend, ask and answer questions, and follow instructions in French. Students explore writing and reading while expanding their vocabulary and command of the language.

    Want to feel comfortable speaking French on your upcoming trip? Our French for Travelers course, for those who have an A2 - B1 level of French (A1 by recommendation of Instructor or Director) is a situational class designed to give you the understanding and confidence to speak French in the many situations which arise in a travel setting: transportation by air, train, bus, métro; asking for directions; lodging at a hotel, B&B, gite; getting money at an ATM or bank; ordering at a restaurant; getting tickets for a concert, play, or museum; shopping; and more. Throughout the course, there will be speaking practice with dialogues and exercises; video clips; tips on cultural expectations; tips on what to see and do that most tourists miss; and what to watch out for. The goal is for each student to be able to fearlessly and confidently engage in each of these situations. The course will be in French primarily, but some English will be used to clarify concepts as necessary.     In person class.  This class is for advanced beginners level-A2, and will challenge students' abilities by strengthening their skills in French through proper pronunciation, and vocabulary and grammar, focusing on a communicative approach to the language. Students will strengthen their knowledge of past and future tenses, pronouns, and other finer points of the French language. Dialogues and listening activities are stressed. Students read short stories to expand their vocabulary, grammar and comprehension. This class will help students learn to enjoy and interact in the French culture, whether it be for travel, work, or personal pursuits. Our classes depend upon minimum enrollment.     In-Person class. This is an ongoing class for students with proficiency of A1 level curriculum.  Conversation for advanced beginners will sharpen communication skills in everyday situations, building on skills previously learned by formal studies or french immersion. Students practice dialogues, learn how to use current practical expressions, improve pronunciation and use correct grammar. Basic knowledge of common verb tenses are expected, such as the past and future tenses, as well as a good foundation of vocabulary. Mastery of French grammar is ongoing.  This class will help students learn to interact in French culture in a fun and engaging atmosphere, whether it be for travel, work, or personal enrichment.
