Coming in 2023

Looking forward to 2023, the Alliance Française of Santa Rosa will be working with Santa Rosa theaters to arrange some in-person French film events. On scanning the reviews, it looks like 2022 was a good year for French cinema. Here’s a list of 10 French language titles released in 2022 that we hope to see online and in American theaters (maybe even in Santa Rosa!).   • Athena (2022, drama, directed by Romain Gavras) – After a fatal incident of police brutality, radicalized young men organize a Paris banlieu to fight a war with the heavily armed national police. Streaming on Netflix.
  • Close (2022, drama, directed by Lukas Dhont) – Thirteen year olds Leo and Remi have always been incredibly close but they are drift apart after the intimacy of their relationship is questioned. Streaming on most VOD services.
  • Full Time (À plein temps, 2022, drama, directed by Eric Gravel, with Laure Calamy) – A national strike forces single mom Julie, who works as a housekeeper, to change her life’s plans. Streaming on most VOD services.
  • The Innocent (L’innocent, 2022, comedy, directed by Louis Garrel, with Garrel and Noémie Merlant) – When your 60-year-old mother decides to marry a criminal, you may try to talk her out of it. Streaming on the Criterion Channel.
  • November (Novembre, 2022, crime / thriller, directed by Cédric Jimenez, with Jean Dujardin, Sandrine Kiberlain, and Jérémie Renier) – The anti-terrorist police begin a desperate search after the 2015 attacks in Paris.
  • Other People’s Children (Les enfants des autres, 2022, drama, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, with Virginie Efira, Roschdy Zem, and Chiara Mastroianni) – Rachel is 40 and falls in love with a single dad with a 4-year-old daughter. In selected theaters.
  • One Fine Morning (Un beau matin, 2022, drama, directed by Mia Hansen-Løve, with Léa Seydoux and Pascal Greggory) – While taking care of her father who is stricken with a neurodegenerative disease, Sandra falls in love with someone new. Streaming on most VOD services.
  • Paris Memories (Revoir Paris, 2022, drama, directed by Alice Winocour, with Virginie Efira and Benoît Magimel) – Mia works through the painful memories of what happened to her during the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris.
  • Saint Omer (2022, drama, directed by Alice Diop, with Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga) – The trial of a young woman accused of abandoning her child calls the prosecution’s case into question. Selected as the French entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards. Streaming on Hulu and other VOD services.
  • Both Sides of the Blade (Avec amour et acharnement, 2022, drama, directed by Claire Denis, with Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon) – A 10 year old marriage is threatened by the sudden temptation of an old friend. Streaming on Hulu and other VOD services.
