New French Films to Watch in 2024
Here's a list of a dozen French language titles that were screened at international film festivals in 2023. Let's hope that some of these will make it online and into American theaters (maybe even in Santa Rosa!). Browse the list to find out more.

Some Past Soirée Cinéma Viewings
Parlons Cinéma: Van Gogh (1991) Thursday February 15 at 5 pm
We will discuss Maurice Pialat’s 1991 film Van Gogh, starring the popular singer of the period, Jacques Dutronc. Pialat is acknowledged as one of France’s most powerful and thoughtful directors of the twentieth century.Parlons Cinéma: Séraphine (2008) January 18 at 5pm
This month, we will be watching Martin Provost's Séraphine, about the self-taught painter Séraphine de Senlis, who works days as a housecleaner, and creates miraculous paintings at night. The film garnered seven César awards, including best actress for the brilliant Yolande Moreau. Film critic Roger Ebert described Provost's subject as "Art that flows from the soul".Parlons Cinéma – Marguerite (2015) – December 14 at 4 pm
Come attend our in-person screening of Xavier Giannoli's Marguerite, starring Catherine Frot. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Following the screening, we'll have a bilingual discussion that will also be available on Zoom. Two female legends of French cinema, Catherine Frot (Claire) and Catherine Deneuve (Béatrice), combine their talents in this drama from 2017. The Guardian said of the film, “two formidable actors attack their roles with the same gusto that Béatrice deploys when faced with a nice bottle of Graves.”Parlons Cinéma: Le dîner de cons
Our film for October is Le Dîner de Cons (The Dinner Game, 1998). Directed by Francis Veber, it’s a classic French farce, filled with zany dialogue.Parlons Cinéma – Hippocrates (2014) – September 13 at 12 noon
For September, we will watch Hippocrates, directed by Thomas Lilti, and starring Vincent Lacoste, Reda Kateb, and Jacques Gamblin. Subtitled “Diary of a French Doctor”, the film is bound to be a hit for those who enjoy episodes of E.R. and House, as well as for fans of the reliably good stars of the movie, Lacoste, Kateb, and Gamblin. We follow the Lacoste’s learning curve as a soon-to-be-tested doctor, on and off the job at a Paris hospital.Parlons Cinéma: When Margaux Meets Margaux – August 9 at 12 noon
Our film this month is When Margaux Meets Margaux (La Belle et la Belle), a 2018 fantasy / comedy directed by Sophie Fillières, and starring Sandrine Kiberlain, Agathe Bonitzer and Melvil Poupaud. What happens when you meet yourself, as a person 25 years older?Parlons Cinéma: The Finishers (2013) – July 12 at 12 noon
