On Monday, March 24, at 4:00 pm, AFUSA in collaboration with Telescope Films will be hosting an online discussion (in English) of Audrey Diwan’s 2021 film L’événement (Happening).
An adaptation of Nobel prize-winning author Annie Ernaux’s eponymous auto-fiction novel, Happening focuses on Anne, a bright college student who wants to finish her studies to escape her working-class background. One day, her life is changed by an unexpected pregnancy. Living in 1960s France where abortion was still illegal, Anne must take matters into her own hands.
Diwan’s film does not flinch from Ernaux’s dramatic and personal source material, and features a masterful performance by newcomer Anamaria Vartolomei. The film won the Golden Lion (best picture) award at the 2021 Venice Film Festival.
Watch the film at home on Amazon, Apple TV+ Mubi, or other services, and then join Peter Debruge, Chief Film Critic for Variety, on Zoom for the nationwide discussion.
Attending the discussion is free; RSVP on the AFUSA website to receive the Zoom link.
